Participants in the 2nd edition of Aswan Forum for Sustainable Peace and Development on Wednesday held a virtual session on the parameters of civilians-related tasks of peacekeeping operations in Africa.
Egypt's Permanent Representative to the UN Amb. Mohamed Edrees, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the Central African Republic Mankeur Ndiaye and UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix took part in the discussion, which was held under the theme: "A Comprehensive Approach to Protection of Civilians Mandates in Peacekeeping Operations."
Participants discussed the imperative of recalibrating the protection of civilians-related tasks of UN peacekeeping operations towards empowering local communities, including women, youth, refugees and internally displaced people (IDPs).
The 2nd edition, which kicked off on Monday and is being held in a hybrid fashion but mainly virtually, will wrap up on Friday.
