President El-Sisi Meets the President of the European Commission, in Brussels

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met with President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on the sidelines of his visit to the Belgian capital, Brussels.

The Spokesman for the Presidency said the President of the European Commission welcomed President El-Sisi at the EU Headquarters. She expressed her keenness to maintain regular contact with the President, given Egypt’s status as a key and strategic partner of the EU. The European Commission President emphasized the EU’s interest to further advance cooperation across the various levels with Egypt, which represents a fulcrum in the region.

President El-Sisi welcomed the persistent engagement with the President of the European Commission. He expressed appreciation for the Egyptian-European relations, underscoring interest to further enhance and strengthen the traditional partnership between Egypt and the European Union. The President confirmed that this is one of the key axes of Egypt’s policy, taking into consideration the two sides’ participation in the Mediterranean regional neighborhood. He asserted that, historically, this geographic status had a significant impact on extending bridges of cultural, trade and political communication between Egypt and the European continent.

The meeting reviewed developments in the various aspects of the two sides’ relations, notably in the fields of new and renewable energy, infrastructure and green transformation, in light of Egypt’s hosting of the Climate Change summit this year. The discussions also tackled cooperation in efforts to combat illegal migration, extremist ideology and terrorism, as well as important political issues of mutual concern in the Mediterranean, the Middle East and North Africa. President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, underlined the huge interest the EU places on Egypt’s key and pivotal role which realizes the balance regarding all regional issues.
