President El-Sisi Presides-Over A Roundtable on Climate

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi presided-over a roundtable on climate change, held within the framework of the 6th European Union-African Union Summit in the Belgian capital, Brussels.

During the roundtable, President El-Sisi confirmed that Egypt’s hosting of the next Climate Change Summit in November 2022 comes in view of Egypt’s realization of the grave challenge posed by the phenomenon of climate change. He pointed out that Egypt seeks to have the summit come out with balanced and feasible results to raise the ambition for climate action, with all its components, whether in terms of reducing emission or adaptation. This aims to build on the positive outcomes of the previous summit in Glasgow and turn climate pledges into reality. President El-Sisi emphasized the importance of supporting the African continent to address this crisis, including through providing concessional climate finance, which is the cornerstone for ongoing efforts in this regard.

The President underscored the need to support the fair energy transition in the African continent as part of efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote green transformation. President El-Sisi pointed out the importance of “The Africa Renewable Energy Initiative (AREI)”, which he launched on behalf of Africa in 2015, as a dynamic framework to mobilize investment for the renewable energy sector, in addition to mobilizing the necessary finance for the implementation of a large number of electricity interconnection projects, agreed upon by African countries as part of the projects’ list “The Program for Infrastructure Development Program (PIDA)”.

The roundtable witnessed an open discussion on efforts to strengthen the partnership between Europe and Africa with regard to international climate action. There was an alignment in views with regard to the importance of bolstering action during the coming period so as to crystalize a common vision to address the challenge of climate change, leading to the Sharm El-Sheikh summit by the end of the year.
